  1. Sam Mitchell says:

Re: Miami Jacobs Career College LPN program.
I am a student at Miami Jacobs, 3rd quarter. I would consider another college if I were you. Tuition is in excess of $20,000. In my opinion the quality of instructors (poor), curriculum (poor) and clinicals (poor). I realized this shortly after I began, but I could not wait for an opening at another school. I had become unemployed and wanted to complete a LPN program before my unemployment ran out. None of my credits would transfer to another school so I’m stuck. I hope I get enough from the program to pass n-clex, I am pulling straight A’s but I have a feeling I will need more than that. The school does use ATI which I feel will help me get through the N-clex. Here’s an example of how one of my classes went:
    Nutrition 1.75 hours 1 day a week:
Week 1 – instructor went over expectations for the quarter.
Week 2- no class the instructor forgot we had a class.
    Week 3-Watched Super Size me.
Week 4- Watched the 2nd part of Super Size me. Instructor handed out a cross word puzzle.
Week 5- Instructor collected the cross word puzzle, skimmed over a few chapters, handed out another cross word puzzle.
Week 6- Changed instructors we sat like 3rd graders, each reading a paragraph form a chapter, collected crossword puzzle. Assigned a case study.
Week 7- Sat like 3rd graders, again reading a paragraph from a chapter. Instructor walked by to see if we did our homework, assigned another case study, told us what the final would cover.
Week 8- Took an ATI assement.
    Week 9- Took final
This class cost me over a thousand dollars. I learned nothing new, but got an A. The clinicals have all been at Nursing Homes, I think we will get 1 day at an OB office, A Peds office, and I’m not sure what they will do for the MRDD rotation. As far as IV therapy we have to have 1 successful stick, and that can be in a dummy arm. But that combined with the class you take is enough to get your IV certification.
PLEASE THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE STARTING THEIR PROGRAM, THEY ARE ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!

  2. Jean Gordon says:

PLEASE look elswhere for you schooling. In the Court Reporting program the instructors are almost all gone, including the dean of 15 years. There is no one on one as promised. You are left to do it all yourself and you can get that online for a lot less money. They let me audit a class since there was not one at my level and still charged me tuition. I am trying to file a complaint with FAFSA. There are just so many other qualified schools dont waste your time and money here.

  3. Maggie Mullins says:

I am currently in the court reporting program at Miami Jacobs. I would not recommend this program at this school to anyone. They have recently changed the classes from a full 12 week quarter to two six-week block classes. This does not work well with a steno class. Essentially, if you do not pass your speed test, you fail. All the other required work does not factor into your grade, so it is pointless to do any of it until after you pass a speed test. As anyone in court reporting knows, you can be very close to passing a speed test and because of the way they are graded, you can fail with a 94%. This is a terrible school and I wish I had an alternative, but since the credits do not transfer I am stuck here.

  4. Roger says:

They care nothing about you, they just say they do…it’s all about the money. The campus director will lie to you and take your money.

  5. Anonymous in Troy says:

Got sucked into the cattle-call as well. I was searching for work after a layoff, raising a family of four on little unemployment, desperate for some kind of cure. The recruiters are great at what they do, lying. They get commission. It’s like our credit being wheeled and dealed. Even financial aid lies. Stipend loans come in two months before you can touch them. They collect interest off off so many people. Sad. They advertise and give freebies for references. It only keeps growing. If I knew then what I do now. I am in too deep and have to finish. Pray I pass the boards. (I will do it on my own) It could all be done online with the exception of clinicals, and even those are usually signed off without procedure. So many materials included with tuition are unnecessary and we should have gotten laptops as the Dayton Campus does. Too many things to cover them all…pathetic for-profit school.

  6. Tonya Dyer says:

I have worked for Miami-Jacobs Career College for going on 3 years and I have to say that the staff and faculty do care about the success of the students and graduates. Last year (2008/2008) the Dayton and Troy campus accomplished over 90 % placement of over 200 graduates (Dayton) and 196 (Troy). I have to say that I am honored and blessed to be a part of such an amazing organization.

  7. Too embarassed to say says:

Miami-jacobs came wrapped up in such a neat little package. It was presented to me on a silver plate adorned with promises. None of them have been fulfilled. I am only in my 2nd session as an LPN student and I have been fed up since day 1.

They have switched our instructors around at least 5 times.

They put too many people in our class (15) to begin with, so they had to send half of the students to do their clinicals and labs at a different campus because they wanted to sell those seats.

The classes are impossible to fail. For some reason “I didn’t feel like doing it” is an acceptable excuse for not turning in homework.

They don’t want anyone to quit the program or to be removed from it, so they are constantly making exceptions for absences and tardies.

Our class was assigned to do a presentation for a group of potential students, eating up the lab time we had on our last day before clinicals so we could persuade new money to come into the school. This consisted of making posters with marker like kindergartners.

All in all, they really do treat you like 3rd graders. I’m not sure what kind of knowledge I’m going to be equipped with, or who would hire me once I get out. All I know is that I’m trying to self teach as much as I can and crossing my fingers that it will be enough.

    DO NOT GO TO MIAMI-JACOBS.

I HATE MJCC. I will say that the one teacher who made class stimulating, Ms. Peck, they pretty much worked to the bone. She had to go elsewhere for health reasons. We were constantly losing or being switched on Instructors. I didn’t really do my research on other schools, I, like alot of other students, was in a hurry to get into a program. Ms. Jean is pretty interesting and Ms. Hasseman takes some definite getting used to, but you can’t make the Curriculum into what it isn’t. There can be alot of blatant abuse between the Nursing Students, which the instructors do nothing to quell. I’m talking about full grown women hurling insults across the classroom everytime someone who isn’t in their clique asks a question. It’s like High School, but worse. It’s like it in all the Nursing Classes, but it’s glossed over to new students. “We have our issues, but we’re a family now.” No, they teach you that Nurses eat their own and that’s what everyone seems to live by there. It’s encouraged. Even the “Best Friends” of girls all snipe each other with horrible gossip when separated. It’s awful and uncomfortable. The motto of the School seems to be, “But you dont really need to know that,” or “But we dont have time to go over that.” Pharmacology consists of Outlining a HUGE book that is already an outline. People do it on auto pilot to just get it done, because even a quarter isn’t long enough to do it properly. I understand having alot of homework in an accelerated course, but doing workbooks of word searches and fill in the blanks, outlining outlines just so the Teacher feels like she’s given you enough to do and getting berated because your teacher is using a different text book than you, but doesnt want to allow you to take notes is frustrating. The whole class has to share what bits and pieces they got just to get notes together that make sense. On top of it, there’s been several times when our teacher is late or stepped out for an hour or two. But she wont hesistate to lock you out for being 2 minutes late. I wouldn’t reccommend this program. I’m lucky to have the time to do the stupid amounts of busy work, granted, I’d like to actually be LEARNING something from my homework, but if I had a young family, I would say, don’t bother. Actually, I say don’t bother with MJCC anyway. Like the others said, you’re just a Dollar Sign. They’re talking about starting an LPN to RN program, but they won’t be getting any more of my Money. I’ll be going somewhere else for my RN. They aren’t training Nurses, they’re training pill-passing Aides, and that scares the hell out of me.

Please check out my blog about Miami-Jacobs at http://www.whyitmatters.org/2009/04/miami-jacobs-career-college-just-what.html to see a LOT of complaints and eye openers about this school. Any of you may contact me at the email above or at 727-638-2178. The one year anniversary of my vow to bring this school to the attention of the public and prospective students is here. Let’s work together to do just that. Take a look at some of the comments and see for yourself. I also urge you all to make your grievances heard by contacting the Ohio Board of Career Colleges at http://scr.ohio.gov/ConsumerInformation/FilingaComplaint/tabid/68/Default.aspx The Ohio Board of Career Colleges was just at Miami-Jacobs Dayton Campus two weeks ago on Friday to check out complaints in the Practical Nursing program. This is a great time to add your complaints. The only reason they get a star in my book on this review is because it is required!
